Maps and Timelines

The interactive map, showing the geography of civil rights demonstrations and riots during the 1960s, as well as the two timelines on the recent civil rights movements, will help students anchor important events in time and place and understand how an event or individual could influence many others.

Patterns of Protest: An Interactive Map
The interactive map, Patterns of Protest, shows the national patterns of protest and civil rights marches that occurred throughout the United States from 1960-1968. The user can click on any of five filters (demonstrations before 1966, major riots before 1966, and major riots during 1966-68, etc.) to view the geographic spread of demonstrations and riots in the turbulent decade of the 1960s.

The Montgomery Bus Boycott Timeline
Professor Dennis Dalton of Barnard College helped prepare this timeline on the Montgomery bus boycott, December 1955 - November 1956. The timeline focuses on the influence of non-violence among the civil rights activists involved in the Montgomery bus boycott. The media-rich timeline includes several video segments featuring professor Dalton.

The Great Society Timeline
Professor Alan Brinkley of Columbia University helped prepare this timeline on the civil rights movement. It contextualizes this movement within a larger history that begins with the Warren Court during the Eisenhower Administration and ends with the War on Poverty of the Johnson Administration. Rich with primary sources, this timeline discusses several protest movements including the civil rights movement.
